Chapter Ten

“Thank you.” Grace smiled sweetly as he set down the cup of tea.

He piled a stack of Hobnobs on a plate, picked up his own cup and joined her at the kitchen table.

“You read my mind. I’m starving.” She reached for one of the chocolate-covered biscuits and bit off half of it.

He took a sip of tea and sat back in his chair. His flat smelled of sex. He felt loose and comfortably drained, and the woman across from him looked prettier than ever with rumpled hair and drowsy lids, her sumptuous figure hidden within his faded hoodie.

He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so content.

“Mm.” Grace closed her eyes as she sipped her tea. “I didn’t think it was possible, but your lovemaking skills are rivaled by your ability to make a delicious cup of tea.”

“Good?”

“Best I’ve ever had.”

“Flatterer,” he tossed back, but pride bloomed in his chest. He’d never gotten complaints in the bedroom, but he’d also never been with a woman as dynamic and passionate as Grace. He’d put a lot of thought and care into her pleasure, and knowing it paid off was the biggest compliment he’d received in a long time.

“I’m serious. Admittedly my track record in choosing men is abysmal, but that’s more on the personality level. They’re usually decent in bed, at least.”

“I find it hard to believe a woman as smart as you could make bad choices about anything.”

“Never underestimate my potential to surprise you,” she retorted bitterly.

He had to laugh at that. “I won’t, don’t worry. What’s your relationship blind spot, then?”

“Charmers,” she answered promptly. “Sweet talkers who say all the right things and seem too good to be true—and then aren’t.”

“I’m not charming.”

She arched a brow. “You were the first time we met. So interested in the hospital, asking all the right questions about my presentation. Half a cup of wine and the next thing I knew we—”

“I was working,” he interjected, cringing at the memory.

“Really? Do you make a habit of putting your face between the legs of potential sources?”

He smirked. “You’re a lifetime exception.”

“Good to know. Anyway, you’re right. Charming is not your default. You’re more…” She scrunched her nose thoughtfully. “Grumpy.”

He burst out laughing a second time. “That’s exactly what my brothers say.”

She grinned. “You have a nice laugh. You should try it more often.”

He stared down into his mug, suddenly uncomfortable. He didn’t have much to laugh about these days—nor should he. His mother was dead. His father was grieving. His employees were relying on him to keep their paychecks rolling in. He had a lot to take care of before he could spare time for fun.

“Where did this charmer kryptonite start?” he asked, redirecting their conversation.

She rolled her eyes. “My dad, of course. My parents divorced when I was tiny, but he’s always been in my life. He’s a salesman, and he’s good at it. You know what the TV shrinks say, women either marry their dad or the man they wish their dad had been.
